Title: Fieldys' Jag....
Post by: Fieldy on February 22, 2012, 07:09:10 PM
My new purchase...

'98 Jag XJ8 3.2 V8.

Good points :-
Climate Control
RCL
Mirrors, Windows, seats, head rests lol.
Auto Headlights.
Full Service History up until £7k miles ago
77,000 miles on the clock
MOT
Sport mode
Back looks like its never been sat in, front drivers seat is a little cracked as old leather looks, but not ripped.
Full, wood dash

Bad points :-
Centre caps on wheels missing
Boot button doesn't work (button on dash and Remote though)
CD Changer is missing

3.2 V8 = 30mpg on a run (Apparently)....

Plans :-
Service it, do a full check over on it.
Nothing else.

Very nice buddy.

Why not put a cheap but well spec'd head unit in and a facier plate instead? So, AD2P, Bluetooth, CD, USB etc?

Nah, I want to keep it original. I like original..... The Mondeo has an after market unit etc, but the Jag won't.

The 4.0 was tempting, but I want to use it for motorway journeys, if it touches 30, it can be viable enough to justify....

Do they suffer from ellecy issues (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

I'm shitting myself, haven't veered from American stuff for years

Does the pope shit in the woods? (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Wouldn't worry about it too much it's usually little things like the RCL.  Hope the remote isn't an Alps fob, I'll never forget the hassle those things gave us and JLR (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)

Dad's usually fixing something on it, doesn't put him off though, 2nd one he's had.   Think the only big problem was a knackered injector or something like that.

Think he gets mid 20's mpg wise though he likes sport mode and the noisy peddle (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

Anyway I work as a consultant for Jaguar Land Rover now so I guess I should sing their praises (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/podette.gif)

Nice cars.  I seriously looked into one (actually a few) before I brought my 4th Gen (back in '03).

I opted for the 4th Gen as I knew the Jag would suffer hard depreciation . . . . but now it's depreciated I'm betting you bagged a bargain !

When I was looking they were in the £5000 mark !!

I've got my heart set on a 300C when the Mondeo gives up . . . but they don't seem to depreciate much at all !

Can you explain please? Are you sure it will fit into the standard Jag headunit and be able to be controlled through the standard Jag head unit? (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Yeah was following a nice 300C estate down the M1 this afternoon and musing.  The MPG wouldn't be as good so would take longer to pay for itself, but on the other hand I would be happy to keep it longer (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/chiny.gif)
Title: Fieldys' Jag....
Post by: Fieldy on February 24, 2012, 11:36:30 PM
Doesn't matter if it would take longer to pay it off mpg wise etc, you would not want to sell it as quick I am sure (not driven one though)

Fieldy

The head unit is incidental. The cd player comes with a box of circuitry (for want of a better description). This box sits in between the vehicles aerial and the head unit and allows the CDs to be played on an FM frequency that you choose. The volume and sound quality (base and treble etc) is controlled by the head unit whilst the functions of the cd multi changer are controlled be either the wired remote or the infra red remote.

In short, with the right aerial connections this cd multi changer will work on ANY vehicle with an FM head unit. There are only three wires to connect, a permanent 12 volts, a switched 12 volts and of course a ground. The multi changer is attached to the "box" via an included control cable and a stereo cable also included. The multi changer can be fixed at virtually any angle as it has adjustment on the side to compensate.

Hope that helps (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)

The tensioner, but, the crank pulley is so worn and wobbly the belt literally fell off... Not even convinced it's the right pulley for the engine (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Here we go eh.... By the time I'm finished with it it will be lovely finished with TLC etc all complete. She was well looked after for a number of years, but it would appear the last two years have been a little nasty.... I like a challenge (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)

Edge:- as for the motorway munching, that is exactly why we bought it. I want to drive to Scotland more and use it for the regular London trips we are doing more often....

Am up in London for the weekend so thought we would use the XJ for the trip. I really wanted to test to see if we had any further issues and also see what MPG I could really get out of it.

I sat at 65-70mph the whole way barthe few 50 zones in place right now and the results were, pretty astonishing.

Needs a new thermostat at some point - That's the small negative. But at £34 + VAT from jag it isn't the end of the world.

On the plus note, these have Alpine stereos so for £3.50 delivered I now have my stereo all ipod'd up (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/beavisnbutthead.gif)
