Title: Picking up my new steed!
Post by: Andy on March 30, 2012, 03:06:18 PM
So after the Cougar failed on me miserably and being sold sharp ish I've been a little car-less for the last couple of months. I put a deposit down on another car last week and after a few bits, like getting a proper reg on it and a small tracking issue, I'm picking up my new steed tonight!

Handy the place having its own fuels pumps as one part of the deal was a full tank of fuel, with they've gone and done!

Once I get it home I'll get a few pics up, but as for now all I'll say it's a Ford!

Ta daa!

Couldn't face getting at Mondeo, so got its smaller brother, a Focus!

It's a 1.8 Petrol Zetec Climate, with bluetooth.

Nice colour bud. Good alloy style too (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/actcool.gif)

Same year as mt gf's Fiesta. Should drive well, nice and tight.

Has she got the new shape? Can't remember when they came in, but I tried my friends out with about 19,000 on the clock and it felt really nice. Comparing it to an old Fiesta 54 plate I had as a courtesy car, it was like it was German!

Gearbox is properly nice, real slick. Well 'appy! Oh and my friends have called it Roo...

Don't... tempt... there seems to be quite a scene in the States for modding the Mk1 and 1.5 Focuseses's... B&M even make a shifter for it! (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)

The 1.8 is actually pretty pokey!

I thought you'd brought yourself a motorbike for a minute.

Well i fitted one in my Mondeo when I had it (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif) stopped me hitting the buttons on the stereo when I was going for the more athletic gear changes.

If you designed it, tell me, how the frig are you meant to get the little retaining clip thing off without shearing any of the tags off?!

Has she got the new shape?

No, she has the one just before, but the face-lift version which was known as the 'Nipple-Lights' version as the lights have a raised nipple on top of them. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

The same as this one, but a 5-door:

ah ya see... that was on the 2.0 which had the mtx-75 trans with the lift up reverse.  the IB5 in the 1800 focus was a regular 'push past the spring' reverse, far easier and NO tangs :)
Title: Picking up my new steed!
Post by: Andy on April 02, 2012, 05:59:50 PM
Ahh, yeah, I see! The MTX-75 was a bloomin' good box according to a lot of the Mondeo modding guys. Very strong, could take NoS an all that.

CP - Whats the gearbox like in hers? A guy at our work kept taking his back (on a PCP) as he couldn't stand how sloppy it was.

I think a bit of F-Body has struck me with this, a) I've started a folder with all my bills and stuff in it, even a mileage record... (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif) b) I found myself cleaning the alloys at lunch time as I 'knew' they could be cleaner.

God bless you Martini, where ever you're polishing now! (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sad.gif)

It's real nice actually, very tight and precise TBH (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

You get a crunch into reverse if you snatch it in quickly, holding the clutch down for a second or two makes it goes in fine, that's the only known fault I know of.. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Noticed I get the same reverse thing on mine. Though found a way to cure it is to put it in 2nd first, then reverse. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Any gear should work. I do the same with the Cherokee, it seems to stop or slow down the meshing so the gears can lock without grinding. I always go to 3rd then to reverse in the Cherokee, seems more fluent (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/chiny.gif)
Title: Picking up my new steed!
Post by: Cunning Plan on April 03, 2012, 09:38:46 PM
FYI, I had contacted Ford regarding the problem and their 'tolerance' for the clutch is 3 seconds. If you hold the clutch down for 3 seconds and it still crunches, they will sort it under warranty (if applicable).

If it does not crunch after 3 seconds, then they say it is okay.

Thing is, 3 seconds is quite a long time if you are waiting to reverse into a space or off a main-road into a driveway or something, you supposed to just sit there counting? (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/huh.gif)

Annoyed me a little, but the car is still very nice to drive, always feels like a go-kart after the Jeep though (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sign07a.gif)

A month on...

Returning on average around 34mpg, at 400 odd miles to a tank. Found the computer for how many miles to go before needing to be filled up almost too tempting to test the other night. I knew how far it was from Slough to mine, just hadn't factored in the traffic jam...

Gave it a proper clean and wax tonight, even though its going to hack it down for the rest of the week.

If it is like the Fiesta, it under-estimates to ensure you always have fuel in the tank to get you to a petrol station. We always find the gauge will be in the red, practically empty and the DTE on the computer will say 1 or 2 miles left, but when we fill back up, we can work out that there is still around 4-5 litres left in the tank as we can't fill up with the full 45 litres. F**K, F**K and more bloody F**K!!

Am so bloody angry, just had a run in with a deer. Not looking good for the car. Front bumper stoved in, radiator/condensor busted, coolant everywhere. Absolutely f**king peeved!

Was doing 30mph just on my road, there was a blind dip and just crusting it I saw some eyes going from left to right, so applied the brakes, but probably not enough as by the time I got to it, it shot back across in front of me. I hit it square between the wheels and it seems to have gone in through the front lower grill, through the radiator and under the engine.

Shock has now worn off, now I'm waiting for the cold light of day to really see how much damage has been done. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sad.gif)

Really not happy as I love this car. It may only be a Focus, but I really do cherish it.

Dam wildlife, I vapourised a Pheasant a few ago in the Camaro, it was a really loud impact but luckily no damage, just blood guts and an engine bay full of feathers (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sad.gif)

Have you got protected no claims ?
Title: Picking up my new steed!
Post by: Andy on December 18, 2012, 08:18:59 AM
No, I don't think I'll do it through the insurance, I'll take this one on the chin. Having had a look this morning, the black lower grill is borked, the lower rim of the bumper that goes underneath it is split in two, rads have been pushed back and sliced in two. Can't see any other damage, although I reckon the A/C maybe knackered as the condensor is piggy backed onto it.

Went back this morning to see if there were any salvageable parts, the deer is sat at the side of the road. Rang the 101 non-emergency police number who took my details, said there's nothing else by law I have to do, they will contact the local authority to either dispatch it or pick it up.

Still absolutely gutted though.

Well just had the RSPCA on the phone, they were rung by the police, she said she couldn't see it, told her were it was and when she found it she pretty much said no hope for it, both rear legs pretty much ruined.

So not a great day so far.

Got the thing up on a jack tonight with a light under it. It looks bad but I reckon its not as bad as I first thought.

Rad and condensor definitely borked, just a case of whether any of the piping to the condensor is knackered as well. Touch wood its not.

The radiator sits behind the condensor (as I was told its a bit sacrificial for stones and debris) the condensor is split across the middle and I guess the radiator is the same, either that or its lost its pipe.

Radiator, condensor and fan assembly moved back into the engine bay.

I clipped a deer, once.

Blind corner on a country road, managed to brake but hit him at about 15mph.
Like you I couldn't see it afterwards and assumed - as there was no damage to the car - that there wouldn't have been any damage to the deer !

The garage got it up on the ramps this evening to get a low down.

Things that are fooked:

Radiator
A/C Condensor
Fan shroud + Fan
Oil Pressure sensor
Reverse light switch
Undertray*
Front grill*
Coolant
A/C Refrigerant

The bumper although split i reckon is more than repairable and rather than replacing it, I'll just repair it.

*will be replacing and fitting myself.

Under tray and grill ordered.

Under tray was £40 and the grill was £20, not too bad. The tray isn't imperative but it does offer some protection to the lower parts of the rads. Grill is properly fooked. Amazed how it all crumbled up.

Got it back last night, really impressed with my local indy, would recommend them hands down for the turn around.

Fan unit from Ford was the bit that held them up, but was still shipped same day. Because we do a lot of handy work for them in terms of getting out broken taps and the like he did a really good deal all the labour and gave me all the parts at trade/cost price. He basically only charged me his hourly rate.

Nevertheless...

Yep, and the battery cover and possibly the plastic bulge bit above the grille.

I have seen people paint the grills in gloss black, giving the front end a much sharper look. Just trying to decide if I can be bothered to risk knackering the anti-theft bonnet lock again.

Had a few weekends where I've had a chance to paint a few more bits. I think I'm mastering it slowly. It's all in the prep!

I also diagnosed and fixed an intermittent buzz sound I had. Thought it was something in the dash, turns out its the engine cover tapping on the black inlet pipes at the front. Only happens occasionally at idle. Anyway, fixed that by jacking up the engine cover hold down bolt a bit. Proper job!

I think the variation with the black air-filter box is good.

Given me a little more confidence in painting, next is taking on the rear boot deck of the camaro...

What are you using to paint, rattle cans or a gun?

Quoting: Andy
paint the grills in gloss black, giving the front end a much sharper look.

This would be interesting to do I think (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/chiny.gif)

Rattle cans for these. Have a small tank compressor but no gun or knowledge of mixing the paint to spray.

I'm getting a finish I'm happy with if I'm honest. It was just something I'd seen on other cars and thought I'd like to give it a go. No one really knows its there until you pop the bonnet anyway (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

I'm not going to do the grills as the guy who did this has said since the paint doesn't like to stick and it stone chips badly.

I'll leave as is now. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Looks good for rattle-cans, but as always with paint, it is all in the preparation!

newb....(http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

powdercoating is a process that requires heating the item to 180 deg..(http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

My bad, but although it is not going to be the same type of plastic, it isn't that stupid as most manifolds are made of plastic now and they must reach those temperatures easily. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

No offence meant Andy, just my opinion, i think the engine cover looks ok but i think the two smaller ones contrast against the inner wing and dont blend so well. At the end of the day its your car and fair play for putting your mark on it, and its all good practice for the Camaro(http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)

It's alright Andy, if I'm honest I just wanted something to see if I could spray and do an alright job.

The contrast seems to be that the paint on the wings doesn't have any lacquer on it, I guess all that in the bay is just a quick once over.

As for the Camaro, a new body shop has opened up on our estate and offered to do the rear deck lid for a decent price. If they do a good job and it looks good I'll get them to sort the lacquer peel on the nose and the ding I put in the side from the t-top.

I'd still be inclined to try the rear panel yourself.  What's the worst that could happen ?

Well I know it's no show car but as yet none of the panels under the bonnet have really had the finish I'd like. I did respray the rear bumper on my old Mondeo, that was hidious and really put me off spraying. I am at the moment doing little bits like the rear hatch surround and the t-top surrounds. Also sprayed a few parts under the bonnet with some matt black VHT.

You come in here waving your high temperature plastic manifolds around... You won't find one for an exhaust. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Happy 50k to my Focus! Still hasn't let me down, just had bad things happen to it:

1 deer strike
2 rabbits
1 drunk driver
1 Ford service person dropping something on it

Bits bought for it:

2 AC Condensors (1 received the full force of a deer, the other a large rock thrown up from a lorry)
4 new tyres
1 new door mirror (drunk driver)
1 new grill (deer)
1 resprayed bumper (Ford technician damage)

Still the best car ive ever owned and now doubles up as my mobile toolbox, fitting all the tools, jacks and axle stands in the boot. Also collected my mates engine from Birmingham in the back.

I'm actually considering a Focus over a Mondeo next time .... Mainly so I don't get stuck being the one to take all the stuff to site for work.

Also, I figure a Focus is gonna be slightly more economical being that little bit smaller .... ?

Mine is a 1.8 petrol and I'm now seeing a pretty solid average mpg of around 32mpg throughout the year.

The drop off in mpg is pretty dramatic once temps start regularly falling below about 12*c outside. The summer it'll be in and around 36-38mpg but now its around 30mpg. Thats with my standard 8 mile A and B road commute and little Motorway driving.

I kinda wish I'd gone for the 1.6, but the 1.8 petrol has the timing chain over a belt and is a better engine over the 1.6 VCT option which is known for having some weaknesses in the VCT area.

I don't know how much difference you'd expect between the two, but I can't imagine the weight difference is huge.

I'd need a Diesel for sure . . . Over the last 7 days I did over 1,250 miles and averaged 64mpg+.

I've just grabbed a 2005 focus after my Mondeo ended up at the scrapyard. 3rd car in the last 6 have ended there, this was the first that was due to me shooting it with an air rifle though (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/lol.gif)

Far better car than the Mondeo ever was. Handling is brilliant, I get 45mpg on the motorway, 32mpg on a full tank of town driving, that's with a 1600 durance petrol

2005 focus

Is that the new(er) shape ? (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

I bought Sammy a '99 Focus 1.8L and it was pretty fun but the thought of doing a 150-mile run in it made my back ache !

The Mondeo does handle like a boat, but it's so forgiving on long journeys.

2005 is the Mk2 like mine, but pre facelift. 2008 they made changes to the front, rear and wing mirrors, moving the side mounted indicator into the wing mirror housing.

The rear spoiler on the hatch back changed to a 'winged' type with the facelift, as well at the interior trim getting updated, and the dash panels and gauges becoming a bit more 'sporty'. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

Yes RK, it was the crossover year so I wanted the MK2.
Never looked at one before but test drove this and loved it. Done Devon and back the other day and found it good enough, but I have the grand voyager for the longer drives.
