Sammy's managed to wangle a product test of Lakeland's beer making kit.
I get the starter kit (bucket, siphon tube, spoon, steriliser and keg) and a Beer kit which makes up to 40 Pints.
I just have to make comments regarding the instructions and kit contents and take pictures.

tbh i have one but dont use it,
it can be used to tell you when fermentation is complete,
but i leave the brew to ferment for 3 weeks then its clear and complete,
the hydro can be used for getting the abv,

beers ferment then need time for the yeast to slow down drop out and the beer will clear, so 3 weeks in the fermenter will ensure this happens,

this weather at the moment is not a good time to brew beers,
the beer needs to be brewed at around 18-20 deg,
the ambient temp of the cabinet i brew in is 24+ during the day thats in a north facing kitchen,
fermenting produces heat and it willl rise to around 26-28 ,

Have a look on eBay as they do the bits you need on there cheaper . . . basically you need a 25L fermentation bucket (in the kit).
The kit gives you a keg, too, but it's not ideal - if this batch goes good I'll skip the keg and go straight to bottling.
The other bits you need is a spoon (in the kit), tubing (in the kit) and Cleaner-stuff.
I'll be buying a hydrometer, personally (NOT in kit) and I have a suitable thermometer already.
If the first batch goes good I'll invest a little more in the kit next time around.

My kit says to keep it between 17 - 25*C but during the day the garage (coolest place in the house) sits at around 26*C !
Not much I can do about that . . . last night was cooler . . I'd guess about 30% of the day was above 25*C so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

yes you need to top up the keg with co2, to prevent a vacum forming and air being pulled up through the tap...
yup a bucket is a bucket, the lid can be loosely fitted its only to keep derbris and flys out...you can even cover the top with a tea towel,

i have two ''king kegs'' with different valves on top , both were second hand on egay as there around £60 new,
one is the small co2 capsule around 6g
and the other is a larger refillable cylinder a s30 which holds 880g its much cheaper and less hassle

TTL is a very hoppy beer ,
and not one you will copy from a kit tbh..
there are shed loads of hops in it a lot of which are added at the end of the boiling...and during fermenting,
pedigree is an easier one to copy ...the woodfordes wherry kit is similar a sort of tasty bitter but no overly hoppy,

Tried a bit of mine last night (there was no pressure in the keg to push the beer out so I only got about 1/4 pint before it started trying to suck back) . . .
I tastes pretty darn good. Very bubbly at the moment but I intend to leave if for another 2 weeks minimum.
A little cloudy - medium brown in colour.
I'd guess around 1-2% alcohol at the moment (you could taste it was there) . . .
BTW - My keg just has a rubber-top valve on it so I'm guessing a new lid is in order . . .

Nothing special but I think the "exact" volumes are used for calculating the alcohol.

white sugar will sometimes give a beer a twang due to the way the yeast consumes it ,you can add brown sugars or brewing sugars ,

I was worried as there was no pressure in the keg at all. I added the valve-lid for the 8g bulbs and have varied success with those (seemed to be leaking out) ??
I've tightened the valve and put another bulb's worth in and it seems to be holding good pressure. Whereas before all the pressure had gone after 2 pints or less !!??
Definitely would be no good pouring without adding CO2.
Anyway.
The Beer.

Strength-wise I'd peg it at a solid 4% alcohol . . . maybe even a 4.5%.
Three pints of that and I'm in a similar place as I would be after drinking 4 500ml cans of Banks's.
The initial taste isn't all-that-great but quarter-way down the first pint and it becomes very more-ish. A good "anytime" beer, for sure.
Certainly comparable to Brewery Beer, but obviously not quite the same calibre.
Would definitely do this one again.

with the one can kit,
you need to add a brewing sugar rather than plain white ,
it ferments differently and gives the beer more body and no sugary twang,

I've used 9 in total and guess I'll need another 2 to get the last bit out (it'll keep for a few days with no CO2 at all so could always let the last few pints run out without pressure ?) - making 11 - but the next one I reckon I'd need 8.

the natural carbonation should enable around half the contents to be dipensed,
then co2 will need to be added...around 4 bulbs would be about right,

home brewing has come on a lot since the60's/ 70's so im told,
when the kits were cheap and info was thin on the ground
the tinterweb has greatly improved the amount of help available to get some thing palatable. [youtube is full of stuff(http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)]
there are some very good specialist beer type kits out there that cost a bit more but get great results,

Indeed. There's only about 4 inches left in the keg...still loads of pressure but at least the foam to beer ratio has finally improved.

I started my second yesterday at 3 weeks mature. Very good, just like the last . . . got about a pint out before the pressure dropped (like the last) so cracked the lid to get a few pints out before using the CO2.
Will happily do this another time but am on the look out for something different next.
The third batch is now two weeks mature. It's a one-can kit. It's O.K, but really nothing special . . . it tastes like home-brew whereas the other tastes like a shop-bought one.
One thing the one-can kit has, though, is pressure. Even carefully pouring a pint produces 50% head . . . and I had to release pressure several times as the keg was proper bloated after just a day of it being in there.
Have no intention of doing this one again - it's O.K - but that's it.
I made a little rack to put my kegs on last night . . . .

you will need to top up as the pressure drops ,
or a vacuum will form and air will get pulled in through the tap...

That should work. CO2 is heavier than air so as long as we're not talking ages it shouldn't do any harm.

Well the mixture will have just been primed with sugar so should create it's own CO2 in the bottle, I'm just using the keg as a bottling bucket but may not bottle it all.

Start point was 1040 so I reckon about 3.5% for this batch.

Maybe. I'll see how the next lot goes as pouring a pint from the keg with the last lot took about 5 minutes (or I got a jug of foam) and was a pain in the arse, this time I will use the CO2 cap which I hope will regulate the pressure somewhat.
Trick is to pull back the rubber band that acts as a pressure release valve to stop the pressure building up too much.
I did this with my 1-can kit and it made it much more manageable.
Never had that problem with the 2-can kit, though.

My plan (long term) at the moment is to switch to the King Kegs and fit pressure gauges to the lids so I can monitor the pressure . . . . that way I can observe what the pressure is when the kegs starts to bloat, reduce it and will know when it's ready for injecting more CO2 before it creates a vacuum.
Basically, as I'm aiming for a 120-pint stockpile I need to keep the beer in tip-top condition to maximise the life span.

Going for Corny kegs and a CO2 tank and regulator set is the way forward but would take up more space than I can justify.
I plan (in the most simplistic way possible) to mount 3 Kegs on a shelf in the shed. Maintain pressure using 8g CO2 bulbs individually. Fit a suitable pipe over each of the taps (about 24" long) leave the taps on the keg open at all times but fit a new tap like this

Do that for each one so theoretically you'd only need to venture out to the shed to add more pressure every 5-6 pints per keg.

I can fit 3 kegs, side-by-side, in the shed on a shelf, so will run a pipe from each tap (I'm fitting ball-valves) to a back-plate that will mount a tap for each keg . . . .
. . . Also, each keg will have a pressure take-off that be connected to its own gauge which i'll mount above its corresponding tap.
That way I can keep tabs on each keg without going outside and know when I'm close to zero pressure (and air getting in) in each barrel . . hopefully minimising the risk of it going off.
Plus it'll be a damn cool set up with 120-pint capacity !!!

I came home to transfer batch #4 (St. Peter's Ruby Red) into the barrel on Friday only to find another kit waiting for me !!!
So batch #5 (St. Peter's I.P.A @ 5.5%) is in the bucket !!!
This only makes about 34 pints but has exactly the same amount of ingredients so's shaping up to be awesome !
When I barreled the Ruby Red the smells where epic. I've not tasted the St. Peter's ones yet, but I'm really hopeful. They certainly seem to the the high-end of the 2-can kits.
BTW - I finished drinking batch #3 last night . . . It was the 1-can kit Sammy bought for me. The last pint was moody and the one before didn't taste right (but I still drank it).
It wasn't terrible, and it did grow on me but I'd never consider a 1-can kit again.
FYI - With batch #5, that makes 194 pints of homebrew. All the kits have been free or a present . . . I've only spent out on the kegs and lids . . . even my bottles, capper and steriliser, sugar has been FOC from Lakelands . . . my new favourite shop that I've never shopped at !!!

This was the first kit I tried. I like IPA and bought it because it was a 2 can kit and the box looked nice (poor reason I know!) I did it as per the instructions but left it in the FV for 2 weeks which is a bit longer than it recommended. I bulk primed in a secondary FV before bottling.
When I came to test the gravity I realised I'd thrown the box away after making it up, forgetting that the instructions were on it so I don't know how close the finishing gravity was to the target.
After 2 weeks the flavour was fairly good but it had a really overpowering bitter aftertaste. I left it another few weeks and it improved a lot so I got stuck in.
Having not tried the bottled version before, I bought a few from Ocado and found that the kit version was much smoother after about 2 months. The bottled one was much more bitter but lacked the depth or any of the floral taste I got from the kit.
I saved the last five bottles for another three months and cracked one open this weekend and it was superb, miles better than the bottled version. I was gutted I'd drank it all. I'll definitely get this one on again. I'm also keen to have a go at the ruby red kit they do as well.

I always give them longer in the bucket and try to allow at least three weeks before drinking.
My Ruby Red is fast approaching 3-weeks mature and I've resisted starting it . . . for now.

The one last night was awesome !
Clear, a little fruity, yet hoppy, too. I closed my eyes and I could've been in a cosy little tavern some place.
It's taken nearly 4 weeks in the barrel to get to this stage but it's been worth it.
The IPA is nearly 3 weeks mature, again is still cloudy and as Art posted, is a little Bitter. I don't plan to try this again until mid-December.
The Golden Ale stalled a bit in the bucket and has needed some encouragement to get it to 1014 . . . she was at 1016/1015 last night so I'm hoping to barrel it tonight . . . . it's been in the bucket, now, for over 2 weeks . . . !

if you get a brew that wont ferment out or gets slow
you can add a yeast nutrient,

My St. Peter's Ruby Red is now about two-and-a-half months old . . It's matured lovely and is crystal clear with good colour.
The St.Peter's IPA, as that review suggested took two months to clear and mature. We tried some after a month at the LAN and it was cloudy and unpleasant (ask Ryan) but now it's very clear and pretty damn strong !!!
If I did it again I'd only add 2/3 of the hop powder (just preference).
The St. Peter's Golden Ale has cleared and tastes good. It's just over a month old, so will be left another fortnight to mature before starting properly.
My next brewing plan is to get another 2 buckets so I can do three batches at once . . . I figure I'll save a load of time on cleaning and preparation and will also save on sterliser (not that I pay for it) . . . It'll also mean that I only have to put up with the buckets in the house for two week as opposed to 3 x two weeks.
The only downside is that there'll be a short period where I'm beer-less waiting for a batch to mature but I'll make sure that I use at least one batch of the "Milestone" kits as these tend to clear and mature enough to drink within 10 days . . also stocking some beer in bottle should carry me through.

I've also got a Wherry that's been in the bucket for 13 days..It was good and active for at least 10 of those days.. It normally slows down after only a few days so not sure what I've done differently... I'll test the Gravity tomorrow and maybe barrel/bottle. Well, the Cider's all gone, drank that after my last 3 kegs ran out.
Speaking of which the "system" worked perfectly . . . in fact, seeing as there were 3 kegs to choose from, even drinking 2-3 pints on an almost daily basis was fine as the pressure in the kegs naturally built up meaning I only used 8 CO2 bulbs across the whole batch ! (and that was towards the end when the liquid volume was really low).
Anyhow -
I got bought 2 Ruby Ale kits for Christmas but held-fire until I had a third kit which came in the way of a Milestone's IPA (£14 after discount from Lakeland).

All three are now in their barrels and building pressure nicely . . . the IPA, I think, will be a slow-maturer as the pressure is staying around the 2-3 psi, whereas the Ruby's are both at 7psi after less than a week.
I'm just finishing off a free 25-pint brew-in-the-bag jobbie that Lakeland made up for Christmas which was never drank . . . surprisingly not bad, considering, the taste is O.K, but there's little "depth" . . . still, it was free and already made ! I just had to leave it to settle for a couple of weeks after it was kicked about by Samantha.

I don't know much they cost but they do taste cheap.
I think if you were just getting into brewing or didn't plan to do it regularly (so didn't want to invest in the kit) then it'd be fine.
These have been brewing/maturing since November so are probably more mature than most would drink them at - which helps.
So, in short, if you've got the kit - do it properly, it's worth it.
If not, it's a good starting point - just leave them to mature as much as possible.

My home-bar "system" has now seen nearly 250 pints over 2 batches of 3 kegs through it with no issues.
I've got 3 more lots in their respective buckets that'll be ready to barrel early next month.

On a side note my last brew was barrelled on 16th February and the last few pints in the last keg are still coming through good and crystal clear . . . making it over 8 months in the keg with no refrigeration or CO2 added.
Pretty impressive in itself, I reckon (and surprising it even lasted that long) !!!
