Title: New Edition to the F Body family!
Post by: F Body on September 05, 2013, 02:38:59 PM
Well after 18years of badgering I finally agreed to get another dog, the plan was medium sized bitch that doesn't malt (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/chiny.gif)
We went round Woodgreen, Battersea and many other dogs homes, but they are nearly all full of Staffy's or Staffy crosses (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/down.gif)
Then a couple of weeks ago went to the Appledown Rescue Kennels in Eton Bray, just at the bottom of Dunstable Downs.
They had over 75 dogs looking for a loving home (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sad.gif) Nothing really seemed right until we met a dog being walked by the kennel staff in the car park, I think it was the puppy dog eyes (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)
All the dogs in the kennels are named by the staff and last months names were all tamagotchi names, ladies and gentlemen please welcome Pluck Shreddington (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)
He's a little darling despite being male and malts like hell (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/rofls.gif)
He is a Cocker Spaniel / Collie cross stray, about two years old and had to be neutered before we could rehome him, this resulted in him having to wear the cone of shame :
He is now so much happier and playful. With any rescue dog you are taking a massive leap into the unknown regarding the dog and it's habits or lack of (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)
However Harvey has been brilliant, he is 100% house trained, so much so that he won't even wee in the back garden (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif) He sleeps all night in the kitchen without making a sound and now that we are using a harness doesn't pull on the lead. He also loves getting into the car and lays down until you arrive, unfortunately his bits are still very very sore and he now has kennel cough (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sad.gif) So it's just very short works and no ball games which he seems very interested in (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/doggie.gif)
Took his Buster collar this morning to see if i could get him to sit still long enough to takes some pictures (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/chiny.gif)
The only strange habit he has is, despite being very hungry when I put his dinner bowl out on the patio, he won't eat it unless i give him permission and call him a good boy (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/eat.gif)

Very cute. Male dogs always have better temperaments I reckon.
He looks like a very good choice (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/grin.gif) That Buster collar looks like a good idea too, better than the 'cone of shame'

Well he was really ill yesterday, wouldn't drink or eat (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sad.gif)
But had some water later and perked up over night and then had his breakfast in four small parts this morning (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/up.gif)
Had a look at his bits and although still scabby they were looking much better, so time to get rid of his bad kennel smell (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sick.gif)
Washed his bed and Buster collar first and then on to the main event :

Chilling out on the sofa, so much for the "Not on the furniture" rule
We tried that when we first got Lucy, only to find her curled up in the leather recliner overnight about a month later. Now she has her own sofa (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)
Harvey is very cute.
Lucy isn't keen on bath time either, although we need to do it every 2-3 weeks as she has issues with her skin. She loves the drying off afterwards though - loves all the fuss (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/up.gif)

A young girl who was sitting nearby asked if she could entry Harvey into the young handlers competition, because she didn't have a dog. No problem I said and off he went :
She is about 12 months old and is a Jack Russell cross, lovely temperament but wants to chase cars (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)
Walks off the lead everywhere and just loves people and other dogs, just don't mention C.....A......T's (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)

Why oh why do people pay many hundreds of pounds for a dog from a breeder, when these beautiful rescue dogs just want your love and attention and will repay you a thousand times over (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/rtfm.gif)

Wow, Harvey really is a cute dog!
Regarding rescue dogs, a lot of the time its because they don't want the dog to go to a home that can't guarantee round the clock care for the dog. Not that we don't give round the clock but at some point we can't always look after the dogs so they get caged for the period that we're out. The local kennels won't accept that and insist their dogs go to a home where they are cared for at all time.
That was our problem last time we were looking for a replacement of Dylan, a lovely King Charles came up for rehoming, but we were suitable. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/sad.gif)

We picked up Pip ( Diamond Lil ) at lunchtime today. She was only spayed on Thursday but is full of beans. Wasn't keen on getting into the car at first, but soon lay down quietly on the way to her forever home.
She met Harvey ( Pluck Shreddington ) again and they were soon best friends. The pooing thing is fine but the weeing inside thing needs some help, so we are letting her out every hour to encourage her toilet training.
She had a short walk with Harvey but is still wanting to chase moving cars. It shouldn't take too long to convince her biscuits are more fun ?
All she wants to do is play with Harvey and have cuddles, although she did chew her micro chip tag off in the first five minutes lol
