Title: Pod's mustang
Post by: Pod on July 18, 2006, 09:57:35 PM
Well, where do I start?

Just ordered two new tyres (Kumho 712's) so I can finally get all four pony wheels back on the car. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Still got to clean up two of the four ten hole wheels and then sell them.

Headliner and associated trim has been removed. Rust isn't as bad as I expected which is good. Sunroof will be chopped out and replaced with metal as money permits.

Springs, shocks, caster camber plates and control arms (all for the front end) are still waiting in the living room (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif) I'll be getting those fitted when I have the money too.

Need to order some parts for the brakes to get them finished.

After that, the shopping list has gears, possibly o2 sensors and a grille insert up next. Wheel bearings too.
Oh, and the necessary bracket to allow me to remove the broken air con system. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/smirk.gif)

There's a very rare 170mph saleen gauge cluster I'm sorting out which will replace the stock 85mph(!) one. I've got the windscreen from the same car, but I don't think there's any different about that.

nice! but keep the air con, it almost definatley only needs a re gas

i'd never even contemplate another car without air..

Thats not a dificult job to do, no more than a day at the most. You would need to get the caster camber reset though but any decent alignment place should be able to do this. I replaced all the suspension front and back and polybushed the entire front end on my chavscort in a day

Give me a shout if you need help or if you fancy a weekend away drop down here and we can do it at the barn. Might even have some where to do the alignment for you seeing as i am so close to silverstone

It's the springs that I'm don't fancy doing myself. I've heard stories of them pinging through garage walls! (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)
I'm not sure I've got all the right tools either.

I'll get another quote on getting the shop to do it and see what that comes to.

That was the rears mate they are even easier i reckon alex could manage those. The fronts are the suposidly dificult ones as you have to use a spring clamp and wind the spring tension down to reduce the height of the spring. If you dont wind even the clamps can spin around and come off leaving a lot of stored energy free to expel its self in any direction

Hello POD,

Will you be up and running for the end of the month.

Its about time I kicked your sorry slow yellow ass(http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/up.gif)

Oh yes. I'll definitely be racing at the Mopars at the end of the month. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)
I'll be pleased with a 14.5 (ie marginally faster than it is now) - I'm not expecting any more as I haven't fitted any go faster bits yet.

You not broken your car again yet then?

Got my new Kumho tyres fitted today, which means all four pony wheels are back on the car. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)
Cost me £15 per wheel - removing and disposing of old tyres, fitting new tyres and putting them on the car. Not bad at all.

First outing will be the Damn Yankees tomorrow, so I'll take some photo's then.

Only ever driven it with Goodyear Eagles, so I'm eager to see any difference in ride quality ( what ride quality - it's an F Body (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/slap.gif) ) and tyre noise ?

New tyres are fitted and on the car.
Those, and the rear suspension mods (Maximum Motorsport lower control arms, Ford C springs and Tokico non-adjustable shocks) enabled me to get a 2.2 60' time at the Mopars beating my previous best of 2.4.
Best time at the Mopars was a 14.78, so a tiny bit slower than my best. However, it was quite hot and a fairly strong headwind resulting in a loss of about 4 mph. Given some decent weather, faster times are a definite possibility.

Latest update:

One of the new back tyres has a slow puncture. Actually, I think it's a problem with the wheel rather than the tyre. I've killed my electric pump too. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/down.gif)

Better news is that me and my assistant (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/lol.gif) Graeme spent Saturday fitting the new front suspension parts.

Early start - 8.30am (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)

Took a little while to figure out what needed to come out and how, and where things went back in again, but it went fairly well. Broke both sway bar end links, so I need to order a new set. It's running on Graeme's home made set now. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif) (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)
Found a shiny looking nut on the ground under the car but didn't think anything of it...

All was going well until the very last part to take off - the last control arm bolt. That thing was not going to budge no matter how hard we hit it!
Tried everything we could think of to get the damn thing out. Eventually managed it with a slide hammer and about 2 hours! (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/mad.gif)
After that, everything went back in fine.

Took it for a quick drive to make sure everything worked ok. No horrible noises and nothing fell off, so back to tidy everything up and go home.

Nothing's ever that easy though - the damn thing wouldn't start! Just a high speed ratchet sound from the starter motor. A starter motor that is brand new and only been on the car a couple of months! (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/mad.gif)
Jacked the car up (on a steep slope a few inches away from the gate post (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)) and took a look under the car.
It turns out that the shiny nut we found earlier had fallen off the starter motor! I reckon it was all the banging and hammering on the car that knocked it loose. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)
Put that back on and everything was (finally!) back to normal.

We could have finished by about 1pm if it wasn't for the control arm bolt and the starter motor. As it was, we finished somewhere around 6pm.

Finished up using Graeme's new alignment tool to set the caster and camber. Great little tool it is too. The Maximum Motorsports plates make it really easy to adjust as well.

Also fitted a new ignition coil in between. The new one looks suspiciously similar to the stock one so I'm not expecting any major difference. It was cheap and it's yellow though. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Pictures are in the gallery.

According to the dyno it peaks around 4900-5000.
Trouble is, stock tachs are supposedly not the most accurate things in the world, especially at the high end. So I've not figured out where that point is yet.

Carb?!?! (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)

The most limiting part of my engine are the stock heads. There's no way it's going to rev to 6500, and even if it did the power drops off way before then so there's not much point.

I've got no idea how the dyno was hooked up - I didn't look. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/confused.gif)

The main reason to remove the air con was to free up space in the engine bay. It's certainly done that. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)

Unfortunatly, the more the car weighs, the less difference it make when you loose a few pounds; simple percentages... I worked out that loosing 100kg my 4th gen would make 12HP per ton... 100kg is a lot to loose though...(http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/smirk.gif)

Did you check and see if you need to resize the pushrod holes for the higher ratio rockers?

***edit***

this is for the SBC and poncho going from 1.50 over to 1.65

Pushrod clearance
Yep same problem on stock cast iron heads.
On aluminum heads check with the manufactuer to see if they require it and then try fit first anyway. There are guys on here that know that answer already better than I do.
On factory cast iron heads that were on engines that did not come equipped with 1.65 ratio rocker arms the pushrods will bind against the hole ,bend and fail, possibly cause other valvetrain or debris in the oil problems if not clearanced properly for the use of 1.65 or higher ratio rocker arms.
Not just a question of bigger but bigger in the right direction.
High ratio rockers and stock diameter pushrods require the hole to be elongated/clearanced by .1875" starting on the top side of the hole closest to the rocker stud and angling down towards the center of the hole finishing at 1/2 the distance of it's depth in most cases.
Larger diameter pushrods will require more clearance for the hole ,possibly on all sides , and also the guide plates if the stock guide plates are to be used.

The guy that asked the question didnt wait for the reply and has now bent his pushrods (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)

I found these today

Not bad, but you helped me install the better-than-stock front control arms.
I'm fairly (ish) certain those AJE control arms need their k-member and coilovers.

An after market k-member and coilovers *are* on the shopping list but quite a long way down.

Also:

The gears are installed.
Tonight I've fitted the new speedo gear so hopefully it will read correctly now. (it was reading 90-100mph on the way home at what was actually 70!)
We'll take it out tomorrow and test it.

What was the old gear ratio? I'm guessing around 2.7, so I'd expect a jump to 3.55 will have a noticeable change in acceleration.

Yeah, the car originally had 3.08 gears according to the door tag.
However, the speedo gear I took out would be for 2.73 gears. So until I check the part numbers I'm not really sure what I had/have.

A few people wanted me to go for the 4.10 gears, but that would be barmy (but fun (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/smirk.gif)) for a daily driver.

It looks like with the 3.55's I'm doing about 3k in fifth at about 70mph. It was somewhere around 2-2.5k before.

I think with my 3.73 they're at about 3,250 @ 70mph . . . Not too bad but not great for economy.

The speedo gear works. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/up.gif) 40mph in mine matches up with 40mph in the Neon.

Spent lots of Sunday installing the new Maximum Motorsports clutch quadrant and firewall adjuster.
The stock plastic quadrant is a nightmare to remove. There's no space and lots of sharp edges. Still got one more bit to take out, then it's putting the new one in. The adjuster is almost done, just needs a bit more sanding of the cable end to make it fit better.
Hopefully get that all finished tonight. Might even take some pictures.

Next job after that will be the brakes. Flush with new brake fluid first, then see if I've got time to replace all the hardware.

Can you get caps for brake line ends?
If, for example, I'm putting in new brake lines, once it's undone how do you stop all the fluid coming out?

You mean if you're replacing a flexi pipe ?

Fluid normally only comes out at pace under pressure . . . Keep the lid on the Master cylinder and that'll keep the vacuum and reduce the escape of fluid . . .

I will be replacing pretty much everything except the hard metal lines - master cylinder, flexi lines, calipers, proportioning valve. That's a lot of places for brake fluid to come out, or air to get in.

If you're replacing that much, let it drain . . . really.

There's no way you'd do all that and keep it in there.

Let it drain and replace the whole lot with fresh fluid. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/up.gif)

Ok, so the brakes didn't go according to plan at all.
Everything is stuck solid as it hasn't been touched for 19 years. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)
So, I've ordered a brand new set of stainless steel hard brake lines from Inline Tubing.

The only part of the entire brake system that won't be brand new will be the brake booster. That should sort it.

The plan now is to do Rockingham and SRS round 1 as it is now. Then sort the brakes out in the three ish week gap till SRS round 2.

That plan didn't work either.

However, I now have all new shiny stainless (hard) brake lines waiting in the pile of bits. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/cool.gif)

I also managed to flush most of the old brake fluid. Only did the back. Amazingly, both bleeds screws came undone easily. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)
The new stuff looks like red bull. The old stuff that came out looked like cloudy coke. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/shame.gif)
Found a small leak in the front of the proportioning valve. Only really tiny and it's going in the bin when I put the new bits on anyway.

But you're thinking of buying Fin's Typhoon? (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/dontknow.gif)

Hey, why fix one car when you can buy another one? (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/tongue.gif)

the daily driver pot of money has nothing to do with the toy budget... they are completely seperate and there's no crossover... especially seeing as we've just bought a house, at london prices... i now have a new pot to consider.... not something i'd expect you to understand, especially living out there in the boondocks...

anyways, why im discussing this on here i dont know....

Blimey, it's been a while since I posted an update.
Mainly because I haven't done anything...

I've just started taking apart a perfectly working car in order to make it faster. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/rolleyes.gif)
It's going to take a fair while to finish everything, but I'm taking pictures as I go along and will post them up soon.

Least things are starting to dissapear out of the house (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/up.gif) worth the inconvenicence of only having one car on the road.

Wouldn't it just be easier and cheaper in the long run to just put a bigger engine in (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)

A bigger engine, like a 351, would work, but would need a lot of extra stuff to go with it. Not to mention stronger clutch, gearbox and rear end to cope with the extra torque.
So not cheaper, really. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)

I'm aiming to get another 50hp or so out of the goodies going on. Maybe more.

can you not get a stroked/bored 302 out to somewhere near 340something.... that'd be good all round power with the new heads/intake

A 331 or 347 stroker kit would be great, but much further down the line due to cost. I'd probably want a new block at that stage anyway.

Looking good and the pictures may be a good reference for when you come to put it back together again !

That's exactly how I learnt to work on cars, taking them apart and then spending a lot longer trying to get them back together again (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)

The heads are off. One of the headers is off too (need another pair of hands for the other one). Still only just getting started...

Black will hide more crap than the yellow. (http://mkb-cc.yanksrule.co.uk//Forum/smileys/wink.gif)
The car is never going to be perfect - the main part of the plan is to make it go faster. The rest is just tidying/cleaning/painting stuff up as I go along.
