Any recommendations on batteries?

It looks like I've killed my 2nd battery in almost as many months. This one was a spare that came with the other car, so this time I'm going to have to dig into my pocket and buy a new one

Any suggestions on what to get and where from?

In a daily like yours I wouldn't be too bothered about make.
Basically I'd just go with cheap & chearful knowing that it will get a good run every day.
The AC Delco I fitted to the Maro last summer was £116, not cheap or very chearful but it did match the original

Ditto - I get mine from a place in M.K - Never paid more then £35 for one and never had one die on me.

Even if the journey is short (less than 10, soon to be less than 3 each journey) and in rush hour. I read that the high end alt I have doesn't operate at it's best at low revs, so may not be giving optimal charge.

Optima batteries are the bomb!!

They are a bit pricey but you defo get what you pay for.

I don't know if they're available to you guys in the UK yet though.

They are but they cost around £160 - £180...

£35 for a battery!! Eeh, I dream of being able to buy a battery for the camaro for £35; when I were lad....

I have to buy Exide Maxima 900DC's just to turn the engine over or at a push the Optima Red Top, the Yellow Top being too 'wimpy' at a mere 750aac!!

I think maybe your demands on a battery are a little higher then Jamies.

Turns out it wasn't the battery after all, but the earth connection.

I have a quick disconnect thingy on the negative post, unscrew the handle and it disconnects. Anyway it looks like at some point it was unscrewed a little but not quite enough, and there is evidence of sparking and the like, and there was a carbon build up leaving a bad connection.

Cleaned it up, and electrics are back to being good.

Makes me wander if I was too hasty throwing the old battery now.
